Susan Jackson - President, International Seafood Sustainability Foundation


Susan Jackson is President of ISSF, a global partnership among scientists, tuna processors and environmental non-profits to undertake science-based initiatives for the long-term conservation and sustainable use of tuna stocks, reducing by-catch and promoting a healthy marine ecosystem.

Prior to joining ISSF, Jackson was the Vice President for Government/Industry Relations and Seafood Sourcing for Del Monte Foods, Susan Jacksonwhere her responsibilities included government relations at the Federal, State and Local levels, and acting as Del Monte’s representative to trade and industry associations. Jackson was also responsible for the purchase of all raw tuna and tuna co-pack manufacturing for Del Monte’s StarKist brand. Jackson joined the H.J. Heinz Company in 1997 as an Attorney in the Law Department, later working with the company’s seafood sourcing and other areas of procurement. 

Jackson graduated from The University of Notre Dame in 1986 with a B.S. in Economics and obtained her law degree from Duke University in 1990.


Christopher Lischewski, Chair - President and CEO of Bumble Bee Foods LLC


Mr. Lischewski is currently the President and CEO of Bumble Bee Foods LLC, the largest, branded seafood company in North America.  He has held this position since 1999.

During a career that has encompassed management consulting with A.T. Kearney and executive positions with H. J. Heinz (their StarKist Seafood business unit) and ConAgra Foods, Mr. Lischewski has been recognized for his strength in business restructuring, developing and executing successful business strategies, completing and integrating synergistic acquisitions, achieving low cost operations and achieving profitable market growth.  In his current position he has been instrumental in creating one of the largest seafood companies in North America and one of the premier seafood companies in the world.

Mr. Lischewski has a BS in Finance and Accounting and an MBA in International Finance from the University of Southern California. 


Dr. William Fox, Vice Chair - Vice President & Managing Director for Fisheries, WWF-U.S.


Dr. Fox joined WWF in his present role in 2008, where he is responsible for the WWF’s U.S. fisheries programs. He has authored or co-authored over 60 scientific publications, and is a member of the American Fisheries Society, a Fellow of the American Institute of Fishery Research Biologists and Sigma Xi--the Research Society.

From 1982 to 1990, Dr. Fox was Professor of Marine Biology & Fisheries at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) and Director of the University’s Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies. Dr. Fox rejoined NOAA in 1990 where he held positions as the Director of the National Marine Fisheries Service and Director of NOAA Fisheries’ Office of Science & Technology. In 2004 he became Director of the Southwest Fisheries Science Center, and has since also headed the U.S. scientific delegation to the International Scientific Committee for North Pacific Tunas and Tuna-like species, and was the chief science advisor to the U.S. delegations to the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission and Northern Committee of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission.

Dr. Fox holds degrees from the University of Miami and the University of Washington – specializing in marine biological systems.


John Connelly - President, National Fisheries Institute


Connelly presently serves as President of the National Fisheries Institute - America’s leading trade association advocating for the fish and seafood community “from water to table.” NFI is a non-profit organization dedicated to education about seafood safety, sustainability, and nutrition, and its members are committed to sustainable management of our oceans and being stewards of our environment by endorsing the United Nations’ Principles for Responsible Fisheries. Connelly also serves on the Marine Stewardship Council and as an advisor to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce on the Marine Fish Advisory Council.
 
Before becoming the President of the National Fisheries Institute in 2003, John Connelly served as Chairman of International Coalition of Fisheries Associations and helped found the International Coalition of Aquaculture Associations. He has also held business leadership and advocacy positions at the American Chemistry Council.


Connelly served as a United States Naval Officer aboard ship, and continues to serve as a Captain in the United States Navy Reserve, with specializations in political-military affairs. 

Connelly graduated from The College of the Holy Cross with a degree in History, and earned an MBA from George Mason University. 


Miguel Angel Jorge - National Geographic Society


Miguel Angel Jorge recently brought his background in marine issues to the National Geographic Society.

Prior to joining NGS, Jorge led the development of policies, positions and strategic direction on a wide variety of marine issues across WWF’s global network, which is active in marine conservation in over 50 countries. With his team, Jorge provided strategic and technical input into WWF’s large-scale marine and fisheries conservation initiatives around the world.


Jorge represented WWF at numerous intergovernmental forums and institutions such as the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission, the OECD and the World Bank. He has managed community-based marine resource management projects, carried out marine habitat assessments and helped governments develop marine pollution, protected area, and tourism policies. He also has extensive experience in planning, ecotourism development, aquaculture and artisanal fisheries management.

Jorge has a Bachelor’s in Aquatic Biology from the University of California at Santa Barbara and a Master’s of Marine Policy from the University of Delaware and training in cross-sectoral planning and collaboration from the MIT Sloan School of Business. 

Randi Thomas - Vice President, National Fisheries Institute – Tuna 


Randi Thomas is currently the Vice President of Tuna Sustainability at the National Fisheries Institute – the nation’s leading advocacy organization for the seafood industry. In addition, Thomas also serves as the US Commissioner for commercial interests to the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas. She has also acted as  the Alternate US Commissioner for commercial interests to the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC).

Previous to her time at the NFI, Thomas served as both vice president then national representative at the US Tuna Foundation.  These were both preceded by her time at the Tuna Research Foundation and the US Department of Agriculture.

Thomas has also served on such distinguished delegations as the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission; the US delegation to the United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement Review Conference; the US delegations to the Preparatory Conferences for the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Convention; and the US delegations to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization Committee on Fisheries.

Randi Thomas graduated from the University of Florida-Gainesville with a BA in Political Science and Economics.

Alfred Schumm - Marine Program Director, WWF-Germany

Alfred Schumm – a biologist, neurophysiologist and environmental engineer – has been with WWF for over 12 years focused on the planning and implementation of marine protected areas, sustainable seafood initiatives and sustainable tourism development.


Since 2003, Schumm has been Director of WWF Germany's Marine Program focused on the North East Atlantic (incl. Wadden Sea and Baltic Sea), West and East Africa and Coral Triangle. In 2009 he became Acting Director of WWF's global Smart Fishing Network Initiative (SFNI)

In addition to his role at WWF Germany, Schumm is a member of the Board of Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Chair of the MSC Stakeholder Council and is on the Scientific Board of the German Marine and Fisheries Museum in Stralsund.

Born in Stuttgart, Germany, Schumm’s professional career included the founding of an environmental consulting company, work with a German federal government and in the EU-ECAT-program in Latvia, Riga and time as Director of the International WWF Centre for Marine Conservation in Hamburg, Germany.

Dr. Victor Restrepo – Chair of the ISSF Science Advisory Committee

Dr. Restrepo currently serves as the Assistant Executive Secretary of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). Previous to his time at ICCAT, Dr. Restrepo served as the Chief of the NOAA/NMFS Sustainable Fisheries Division, where he acted as head scientist of the USA Delegation to ICCAT. He has also spent time as a Population Dynamics Expert at ICCAT, as an Associate Professor at the University of Miami and as an IPA Research Specialist at the National Marine Fisheries Service’s Office of Science and Technology.

Dr. Restrepo has been a member of over 60 scientific meetings of ICCAT, ICES, NAFO, FAO and US, as well as Chairman of ICCAT working groups on Precautionary Approach and Stock Assessment Methods.  In addition, he has also served as the Chairman of GFCM-ICCAT working group on Mediterranean Large Pelagic Fishes.

Dr. Restrepo holds a PhD in Population Dynamics from the University of Miami, as well as a BSc in Marine Science and Biology from the University of Miami.
