Description

Tuna fisheries comprise about 5% of the world production of marine fishes, but a much larger proportion of the total value. There is continuing high demand for tunas and this fact results in a continuing and increasing interest in capturing them.

There are numerous examples in the literature of the failure of management systems to adequately conserve the stocks of fish that they are charged with protecting. About 25 percent of the marine fish stocks of the world are overexploited, and others are rapidly becoming so.
