Vessels in Other Sustainability Initiatives (VOSI) Tool
ISSF’s VOSI presents detailed information about tuna fishing vessels worldwide that (1) have publicly committed to sustainable-fishing best practices beyond those tracked on ISSF’s ProActive Vessel Register (PVR) vessel list and/or (2) are participating in Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)-certified fisheries, MSC Improvement Program fisheries, or Fishery Improvement Project (FIPs).
Using the VOSI
Each vessel in the VOSI has a profile card. In addition to listing sustainability best practices that a vessel follows, the card shows:
- Dimensions, national flag, UVI number, and other characteristics
- Participation in Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)-certified fishery, MSC Improvement Program fishery, or Fishery Improvement Project (FIP), if applicable
- Related data from the PVR, if applicable
If you are aware of any errors or omissions in the VOSI data, please notify ISSF at [email protected].
To get started, use the “Filters” tool or “Search” box to find vessels that meet your criteria:
- Filter by type of initiative, best practice, vessel type, and/or vessel flag OR
- Search by (1) names of vessels, fisheries, or improvement projects or (2) vessel UVI numbers
In your results, cards will display in alphabetical order by vessel type and then by vessel name.
Each time you check or un-check boxes in the filter, click the “APPLY” button to see the modified vessel card results.
To un-select all filters at once, click on “Clear Filters.” Then make your new selection and click “APPLY.”
Filtering or searching will retrieve cards for all vessels that meet your criteria. In the results view, the cards will display partial information on vessels.
To see full details on an individual vessel, click on the vessel name or “Show More” on the card. The complete profile will display.
As you use the VOSI, you have the option to “pin” cards for vessels of interest that you want to review (and possibly export) later in your session.
In the initial card view, the pin symbol is at top right of the card. In the expanded card view, see the pin box at the bottom right.
- After you pin a vessel, the card’s border and pin symbol become solid blue.
- To un-pin a vessel, re-click the pin symbol, which will return to an outline shape. Or un-pin using the button in the expanded card view.
If at any point you want to see cards for pinned vessels only, turn on the “Only show pinned” toggle button (located on the bar above the results display area).
NOTE: Pins are not saved once you leave VOSI. They are active only for the duration of your session. To save pinned information for future reference, export it to a CSV file (see below) before you end the session. You can, however, use the “RESET” button to reset previous filters and searches, while pinned vessels will be preserved.
If a VOSI vessel is also listed on ISSF’s ProActive Vessel Register, you will see a “Show PVR Data” button at the bottom left of the vessel’s expanded card. Click the button to view PVR data embedded in the vessel card view.
Click the “Export PVR Data” button if you want to export the vessel’s PVR information in CSV format.
In the expanded profile card view, you can copy vessel information to a clipboard for insertion into your own documents: Use the “Copy Information” button at the bottom right of the card.
From the VOSI search or filter results page, use the “Export” button to download VOSI data in CSV format. You can export information for:
- All vessels in VOSI, OR
- Only the vessels displayed on the page based on your search, filters, or pins
NOTE: If a vessel participates in more than one initiative, it will appear in multiple rows (one per initiative) in the downloaded file.
