The underwater landmass that extends from the continental margin to beyond the limit of the exclusive economic zone (EEZ), resulting in an area of relatively shallow water known as a shelf sea. This area is also sometimes referred to as “extended continental shelf” and its limit is determined by the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf.
