Regional Fisheries Management Organizations

International governing organizations formed by member nations or countries that share practical and/or financial fishing interests in a particular region of international waters or of highly migratory species. These include coastal states, whose waters are home to at least part of an identified fish stock, and distant water fishing nations (DWFNs), whose fleets travel to areas where a fish stock is found. RFMOs are dedicated to the sustainable management of fishery resources, and most of them have management powers—such as setting catch and fishing effort limits, technical measures, and control obligations.
